I meant to have an update on here earlier this week, but I’ve been having a few family issues. My Grandma and Grandpa are having some severe pain and mobility issues, respectively. The family and I have been helping them manage, and as a result have been pretty pressed for time. They’re doing well though, and we’re coming up with a few ideas on how to make things easier on all of us.

My parents keep telling me to throw them in a home the second they start getting all senile and fragile on me. We’ll see.

Anyways, this past weekend was the great weekend I’ve been looking forward to, and talking about constantly. A-Kon. The nerd mecca of the southern U.S. Did I go as I’ve been promising? You bet your butt I did. I had also promised that I would be cosplaying as my home boy, Proto Man.

As of 2 to 2 1/2 weeks ago, I still had yet to really start working on it. Not a lot of time to prep, so let’s see how I did.

Let’s start with the Proto Buster. Possibly the hardest individual component, actually requiring me to be a man and pick up some power tools. I started with some circular wooden discs, and dowels, and just started running with it. A drill with a 3/8 inch drill bit, a jigsaw, and some wood glue got me this far:

I got creative with a couple of extra dowels, and now I’ve got something to hold on to.

At this point I needed something to wrap around the exterior. I was a little stumped as to what to do here, but then I found some bubble wrap at home depot that was pretty much the perfect size, and added some duct tape to get to here:

A few coats of paint, and I was ready to call it a Proto Buster.

While I was in the process of working on the Proto Buster, my helmet came in. I’d have taken some before pics of it, but it was just a standard glossy red helmet. It actually had a pop down inner sun visor, making it twice as cool, but still pretty standard. However…add a few coats of white and clear coat, and take off the main visor and we have this:

I didn’t have the tools to take off the front portion yet…I’ll probably need a circular saw for that.

Getting all that done brought me to about 4 or 5 days before the Kon. So needless to say, I never got around to making the shield. Next year…I’ve got a few things to improve upon.

With a few added accessories…

You have a pretty good Proto Man.

That’s right…red shoes to match. Cadillac shoes…yea, they exist, thank God. Because they were the only solid red shoes I could find, and at a decent price too.

Not bad, thought I. My first cosplay could be a lot worse. I didn’t really think it was anything that special, but I was happy with the effort I put in. I would not have expected to have gotten 56 picture requests for the 2 days that I was there. Yep, I counted. Of course I was, it was my first A-Kon, and my first cosplay…I took it as a point of pride.

Let me show you how I could have done a lot worse real quick. I spent a lot of time those 2 days looking for other Mega Man characters at the Kon. I was told that there were several pretty good ones running around; Mega Man, Mega Man X, even someone in an Axl cosplay. I looked long and hard and could never find the good ones…but I did find this guy, and his best Mega Man X…

I don’t wanna trash this guy too much. He put in enough effort to be recognizable…at least to those who know the Mega Man series, but let’s be honest…he’s wearing jean shorts.

Alright, a little lie there. I said I never found another good representation from the Mega Man Clan…until I ran into another Proto Man…

He went after a slightly different version of Proto Man (I think he was going for the Protomen…they’re a band), but he was solid. Love his machine gun/buster gun, and I’m taking notes from his shield.

I found a lot of other favorites while I was there.

Cloud Strife

Lady Cloud Strife and Squall Leonhart

Halo Spartans

And of course, really hot lady nerds…

I reiterate…nerd mecca. I’ve been telling this to everybody since then, but I have found my tribe. I’m definitely planning my return next year. Miko has also peaked my interest in AnimeFest coming up on Labor Day weekend. We shall see…

Speaking of which, shout out to Miko who got me interested in A-Kon in the first place.

I’ve got a lot of things to consider in the coming months. While I do that, I’m planning on doing a lot of writing and a lot of music work. Not saying anything for sure, but you might expect some new music from me by the end of the summer. That sounds like a pretty reachable goal. I’ll do my best for y’all. Until then…

Keep your heads up, your minds sharp, and your hearts open.

– The Outlaw

[BONUS ROUND] Name the cosplay character below. Knowing my friends, y’all will get this pretty quick.

  1. I’m glad you had so much fun & that cons have become part of your life. I hope you get a chance to go to AnimeFest. I heard it’s a good con. I’ve never been to it. You made a pretty sweet Proto Man too. Until next time, mi amigo~
